Focus on the positive

Nevertheless, I went back to Google to find some more answers. I am always on the lookout for various treatments but am more interested in simple, widely available natural therapies. That’s what I love about Kombucha. It is a fermented tea that everyone can make very cheaply. Whereas I would occasionally read about some exotic plant or extract that was only available in a small localised area, I couldn’t believe God would limit the availability of such an effective treatment that everyone needed. What about the rest of the world?

So when my search led to a blog by Megan Kelly, it really got my attention. It was entitled “What I wish I had known”. She too had many health problems, but unlike me, she actually had lots of diagnoses and was prescribed lots of supplements. But then, as she reflected on it, she had some serious concerns or red flags – several of which I shared.

Like me, she searched for answers to health problems and was using tests to find them. But then she wondered about the rest of us, who didn’t have access to these tests: “Surely, God has a way for them to be healed?” Yes!

She was also concerned that you need to be careful, as your body will respond with symptoms that match your diagnosis. I believe this is why it can be dangerous to read too many medical articles (whether via medical books or Google searches) as you can get what is called the nocebo effect. We are more familiar with the good that can come from the placebo effect, but the nocebo effect (getting the harmful side effects/symptoms) can be just as powerful.

Her bottom line is that instead of focusing on your problems, you need to focus on finding out what is stopping your immune system from functioning as God intended. Wow! That makes so much sense.

As I had found out, your brain produces a negative chemical in response to negative thoughts, so focusing on your problems (which are very negative) would keep releasing toxic chemicals. That’s not what we want.

So, what could be stopping our immune systems from functioning as God intended? Like many others, Megan feels that 95% of the problem is stress. Oh dear, it is beginning to sound like we’re back to blaming it all on stress and fear yet again. I have usually reacted against that. It feels like a put-down, like I am being treated like a hypochondriac. Admittedly, she is not accusing me of imagining problems, but it seems to suggest that I am not coping with life as well as others. Everyone faces stresses in life, especially in our modern lifestyle, but not everyone has chronic conditions. Others are dealing with it; why am I so different? I don’t see myself as a fearful person. Sure, like many others, I have a deep-down fear of rejection, but I like to think that I am not afraid to push on and work through many difficult things in life.
